Welcome to my sentimental little corner of the digital world, where there's magic in all the little things, and creativity & connection are at the heart of it all.
Tips for documenting your life
I'm on a mission to help people document their lives more, because I always loved having lots of photos & videos to look back on in my life, and I want that for you too, and your future generations! So I'm sharing some tips & talking about it more, because in this busy, chaotic world, it's one of those things that can be easily forgotten... but not on my watch!
Which brings me to our first topic in this 3-part series: Balancing being present with capturing the moment
One of the biggest challenges I hear is "I'd rather live in the moment than get caught up taking photos of it" and... you're not wrong! As someone whose comfort zone is being behind the camera and observing, it pains me to say it, but I 100% agree.
First & foremost, always prioritize being present in your life over photos. You don't want to get to the end of your life & realize you were on the sidelines the whole time! That said, if you do find that you like to be able to revisit those moments later on, then these tips are for you!
Tip #1: Realize that one photo is more than enough
If you snap more, great! If not, one is better than none in my book. Not every occasion has to be a whole photoshoot with a billion photos (*cough* no one hold me to that personally though, because I love to do exactly that LOL), but I think it helps to realize that you can just take 1 and that's perfect! Sometimes that takes away some of the overwhelm of trying to capture it all.
Think of it this way: If you only took 1 photo a week (even just on your phone!) you'd have 52 photos from your year. How beautiful! You could print a whole album out of that. And those 52 photos were just 52 out of your 525,600 minutes of life in a given year.
Tip #2: Once you take a few, put the camera down.
I'm still finding my balance with this personally, but it's true! Make it a habit to snap a few photos, then set that camera (or phone) down for a bit. Don't try to edit it right away to post online. Don't stare at it and overanalyze it. Keep it quick, and get back to the moment!
Tip #3: Know that it's okay to enjoy documenting.
The ability to freeze a moment & revisit it later is a gift! If you're the one in your family or friend circle who enjoys snapping a few or taking a video, know that it's okay to enjoy and value that. It's one of those things that not everyone will see the value of in the moment, but they'll more than likely be happy to have them later on.
